Tips for Social Anxiety When Calling

  1. Your anxiety is real, and even if it's not logical to be afraid of calling you are, and no one can or should deny that.
  2. It may be helpful to prepare a script to read directly from, or at least plan out what to say. It doesn't have to be as long as the one here.
  3. If you have questions or need moral support, Nerdfighteria is happy to help <3

What to expect:

When calling a congressional office directly, you may be asked to choose from a list of reasons to call. If not, or once you've given a reason, an aide will pick up or you will be directed to leave a voicemail (most likely if you call outside of business hours). You'll usually receive a short greeting, and they'll listen to your message. After that, they may ask some basic clarifying questions and for information like your full name or zip code. Once everything is communicated, they might thank you for your call, and you're done!

If you're calling using the Capitol Switchboard, you'll be asked for the name of the Senator or Representative you want to reach, so have that ready! If you don't, you will also have the option to ask for help finding them.

Hello. My name is [Full Name], and I live in [City]—zip code number [#####].

As your constituent, I urge you to vote NO on the $9.4 billion rescissions (ruh-si-zhn) package that would cut hundreds of millions in funding for crucial programs, including PEPFAR (pep-fahr), nutrition assistance, maternal and child health programs, UNICEF (you-ni-sef), and clean water initiatives. Congress approved this funding on a bipartisan basis for fiscal year 2025, and we need funding for PEPFAR (pep-fahr), global health, international organizations, and development assistance to continue saving millions of lives and preventing the spread of deadly diseases.

Dear Senator [Last Name],

My name is [Full Name] and I am one of your constituents. As your constituent, I urge you to vote NO on the $9.4 billion rescissions package that would slash funding for highly effective global health programs like PEPFAR, maternal and child health, malaria and tuberculosis prevention, UNICEF, and clean water and nutrition programs.

These programs are not just compassionate — they are strategic investments that save lives, build international goodwill, and cost pennies on the dollar compared to the long-term costs of inaction. PEPFAR alone has saved over 25 million lives from HIV/AIDS and is a shining example of U.S. leadership at its best.

Cutting these programs may seem fiscally responsible on paper, but in reality, it risks undermining American influence, destabilizing fragile regions, and creating health crises that can cross borders. When the U.S. pulls back, countries like China are eager to step in, expanding their global foothold while ours recedes.

Furthermore, many of these programs align with pro-life and pro-family values — protecting newborns, supporting mothers, and preventing needless deaths through clean water and basic medical care. They reflect the best of American ideals. Thanks to the PEPFAR program, 5.5 million babies have been born HIV-free.

Senator [Last Name], I urge you to vote no on this rescissions package and to continue supporting policies that are both morally principled and strategically wise.

Respectfully,

[Your name]
